The Chairman's XI decided to bat, coins never being tossed on these occasions!
There followed what can only be described as a runfest as the Chairman's All Stars scored at such a phenomenal rate that the police phoned the Clubhouse threatening to issue them with speeding tickets. Jim Ansley (127*) was the prime offender with excellent support from the other batsmen with the exception of Chris Whitehead who amazed spectators by surviving for five balls and scoring 5 runs. Skipper Trevor Jackson took pity on the opposition and called off the carnage after only 39 of his sides' 45 overs with the score at 320 for 5.
At the Chairman's request, Trevor Jackson set about ensuring that Rodmersham were allowed to score "about 300 to make a good game of it". Unbeknown to these two luminaries, the rest of the Chairman's XI thought it would be a great wheeze if they could manufacture a tie! This lead to some rather strange looks being exchanged between Jacko and his team as the Rodmersham innings, after a faltering start, gathered impetus. The sound foundation laid by Alex Hart(87) and Piet Botha(64), both dismissed by excellent full tosses, was built upon by the later batsmen with Colts Dylan Emmett(39*) and Matt Godden (30) leading the way. The 45th and final over arrived with Rodmersham skipper Darren Nokes, batting at eleven, having just arrived at the wicket needing an unlikely 17 runs for victory. Nokesy became hero of the hour as "bowler" Steve Marsh, presumably still trying to make a tie of it, proceeded to concede 18 runs for Rodmersham to win from the last ball of the match.
So it was that Steve Marsh (4 overs for 50 runs) demonstrated why he was never selected by Kent CCC as a bowler and Trevor Jackson learnt the true meaning of "ALWAYS BAT OUT YOUR OVERS!"
