Neither side came to grips with the strangely truncated format of the Doug Wood Cup which restricts each side to 16 overs and bowlers to a 9 yard run up.
Upchurch batted first and posted what looked to be a modest 98 for 4. The Rodmersham response faltered after a good start as batsmen ignored the welcoming open spaces where a simple push would have brought certain ones and twos preferring instead to go for the glory of big hits. This caused wickets to fall regularly as one bad shot begot another and left Rodmersham needing 9 to win from the last over from which they could manage only 5, leaving Upchurch deserving winners by 3 runs.
There were two notable performances in the game, both from bowlers. Chris Whitehead (Rodmersham) conceded only 9 runs from his 4 overs whilst taking one wicket and Dave Lloyd snr (Upchurch) took 4 for 23 from 4 overs.
