Match Report

Old Elthamians v Rodmersham

Match Type Kent League
Venue Bottles Lane
Date Sat 21st June 2003
Result Rodmersham(10pts) tied with Old Elthamians(10pts)

The high quality batting which brought Rodmersham victory in their last four Kent League matches deserted them against Old Elthamians on Saturday.

Elthamians elected to bat and made slow progress against accurate Rodmersham bowling. After 35 overs they were 94 for 3 and their subsequent attempt to accelerate the scoring rate during the last 15 overs faltered as their innings closed at 166 for 9. J Davidson (49) top scored for Elthamians whilst Pete Botha(5 for 42) was the pick of the Rodmersham bowlers.

Rodmersham started disastrously in their pursuit of a seemingly modest victory target when they were reduced to 23 for 4 after only 10 overs. Neil Hodkinson(65) and Simon Morley(40) then set about retrieving the situation with some resourceful batting and changed the likelihood of defeat into one of victory. With 3 overs remaining and 3 wickets in hand, 11 runs were needed for victory. With 4 balls remaining and 1 wicket in hand, 1 run was required for victory when the last man was dismissed to produce that rarity in cricket - a tied match.

Whilst Rodmersham may have considered themselves fortunate to "get out of jail" they would also have considered themselves unfortunate not to have won!
