Despite some early tight bowling by Rodmersham, the Walmer batsmen loosened the shackles to score freely in the latter part of their innings to reach a respectable 187 for 4 from their 40 overs. Fourteen year old Richard Cooper returned the best bowling figures of 2 for 10 from 5 overs.
On a pitch which played remarkably well despite heavy overnight rain, Colin Mason and Michael Jones laid the foundation for a Rodmersham victory with an opening partnership of 83 in 22 overs. With the fall of the first wicket the Rodmersham innings lost it's impetus with only 30 runs coming from the next 11 overs before the fall of the second wicket. The arrival of Neil Barton ( 30* from 15 balls ) saw a rapid acceleration in the scoring rate with 50 runs coming from the last 7 overs. Despite this and an excellent knock by skipper Colin Mason (83*), Rodmersham finished 21 runs short of victory and had to settle for self imposed defeat.
